To thrive in their uncertain future, students must know more than how to take tests. Transforming students into confident, self-directed, lifelong learners requires differentiated instruction and project-based learning. This practical classroom resource presents dozens of strategies for differentiation among learners (flexible grouping, choice boards, tiered assignments, and more) and a range of fully developed content-focused projects, each modeling one or more differentiation strategies. All projects are aligned with rigorous, comprehensive content standards in the areas of English/language arts, math, social studies, and science. Designed for use by any teacher, in any classroom, in any school. Includes reproducibles. The included CD-ROM (for Macintosh and Windows) features all of the reproducible student forms from the book plus four bonus projects.

Teaching Beyond the Test—Differentiated Project— this is a terrific resource for every teacher of grades 6-12 who wants help with differentiation. The book has many excellent examples for accomplishing the mission of differentiating the classroom. I just got the job of department head at a school that is rolling in project-based learning. I understand, somewhat, the concept, but didn’t understand how to put it together and how to make sure every student from a special ed to an english language learner to a GT student could be involved in every project. “Teaching Beyond the Test” by Phil and Dori Schlemmer gives any teacher looking into project based learning or already immersed in it a great set of tools to work with in their class in order to differentiate projects.
The book is broken up into two parts, the differentiation strategies and the model projects. In the differentiated strategies section, the book discusses how to have diverse content, processes, and products. Combining the three creates a great project that can get every student in your class involved and learning the core content that you need them to come away with from the unit. I took some of the ideas to create a small project on WWI with my current students. The students got to choose their topics, research them using technology and create a finished final product. Each of my students were working 90-95% of the time and interested in learning about their tasks, not just completing it for a grade.
In the model projects section, it discusses how to create a rubric for a project and gives teachers a wonderful array of projects that can be adapted to use in any middle or high school classroom for the four core content areas. I learn through examples, not just explanation, and this book not only explains how to differentiate, but also gives you projects that can be differentiated.
The one thing this book was lacking was some explanation on how to set up a project from beginning to end. I will be checking out “Project Based Learning” by Thom Markham and “How to Use Project Based Learning in the Classroom” by Robert Delisle in order to get a better idea. Every teacher in the United States ought to use books like these and the idea of project based learning. It doesn’t get rid of the direct teach method, it just gives it a purpose. I am just now getting into it and have seen the fruits of making the learning relevant to the kids. Purchase this book and others and begin teaching a better way. Highly recommended!

I’m a new teacher (MS/HS Science) who is interested in student-centered, differentiated classrooms. I picked up this book, and I found it incredibly helpful. It is laid out in such a simple, easy-to-read and easy-to-use format…you can easily read it in one day. The author explains a variety of ways and activities that incorporate differentiation and authentic learning into the classroom- the first half of the book explains the strategies, and the second half of the book includes lessons for just about every subject. This is a really great book, and the CD has additional resources that are useful as well. Highly recommended!
