Standards of Learning

The United States rely on the Middle East for oil, China and other asian countries for cheap goods, third world countries for cheap labor and the list goes on. The only areas where the U.S. remains self-sufficient appear to be agriculture and education (though education standards trail many other developed nations). Is this a potential problem?
